Need to Know
These preferences are all underpinned by sound reasoning. We want our guests to relax in our 'mix and match' home environment, and it makes life a lot easier if we can do the same. Part of that is best served by identifying dog idiosyncracies, and behaviours, excessive barking, potential abandonment issues, or reactionarly or aggressive defensive territoriality, over toys, treats, or general feeding. The 'mix and match' of dogs is science based and not ever left to chance, so as to minimize conflict. Even so, not all behaviours are predictable, so we continually monitor.
Meet and Greet
If feasible we prefer to meet and greet our staying guests and their owners ahead of any prolonged stay. First, it gives the owner an opportunity to chat with us, and simply ask questions, face to face, which more often than not, would give peace of mind. Second it allows the owner and Pooch-Kim's to establish that their fur baby is a good social integration fit and importantly, that the open home enviroment and care arrangements are suitable.
Welcoming Party
We receive owners and guests at the front door, and there is normally a canine welcoming committee on hand in reception, albeit behind a gate. We live in a residential neighbourhood so we try to keep doorstep interactions short and sweet, to limit the barking that ensues. For a prolonged chat we simply step outside and shut the door.
Enclosed Dog Yard
We have a fully enclosed and separate dog yard, with high fencing and gating, so our guests can safely toilet and get some air out of doors. Again our preference is for dogs that are confident and not prone to barking to excess. Our neighbours are in close proximity.
Trail and Beach Walks
Our guests are either trail walked or beach walked daily based on season, unless high winds pose a risk, particularly in forest trails. Well versed in handling pack walks, our experience is that the pack stays together, and keeps close. If you dog has to be leashed at all times, we need to know. If your dog is a runner we also need to know.
